An archetype is a representation of a motif that varies in detail without losing the basic pattern. It originates in our collective consciousness. They are symbolic images without known origins and can manifest themselves in any part of the world.William Lunsford, by accessing this imagery, continues this tradition that is transcendent of tradition. He strives to incorporate this imagery with the expression of his own artistic style. In both his jewelry sized pieces and his larger sculptures, Lunsford produces his work with quality of design and performance. Because each piece is hand finished, he selects which characteristics are left to define the piece as an original handcrafted presentation.
Lunsford has studied art and sculpture at Mesa Community College, Arizona State University and the University of Arizona, as well as apprenticed under sculptors producing larger than life bronze pieces with Lunsford doing much of the work on waxes, molds, pouring, chasing, grinding, welding and finishing. Additionally, he has sculpted forms used commercially in structures as far away as Malaysia. He is now concentrating on his own work and is striving to finally cast the multitude of pieces now existing in wax and plasticine.
